2011 – The Road Not Taken

Happy New Year to all my Blogging Buds!!

This New Year’s Eve was so different for me than many others.  I was incredibly retrospective and introspective as well.  2010 was a good year; but ended on a rather sour note.  Those of you who read my blog regularly know to what I refer.  So here I am on the crux of a new year.  A time for new beginnings.  A time for resolutions.  A time for change.  A time, that for many, is a hopeful time.   I feel a bit devoid of hope this year.  This is very unlike me and I need to find a way to fix it.

A good friend told me that it is a new year, you need to jump in and take chances!” I couldn’t agree more.  That is exactly what we ALL need to do – JUMP IN!  I need – we need – to not look at the past mistakes, past occurrences, past issues, losses, etc. but instead look forward to our life in THIS year.  What do we really want from our life?  I mean, seriously, what do WE want?  What personal or professional goals do we have?  Do we want to have lilies or leeches in our lives? Do we need a new job?  A new relationship?  Do we need to personally change ourselves – appearance, weight, hair color?  What do we want to accomplish THIS year?

For me, I want to be happy.  I have many ‘goals’ that relate to career and personal life.  I have fitness goals and health-related goals.  However, this year the goals are going to be egocentric in nature.  2011 will be the year of ME.  I think we all need to put a little of ourselves back into our lives.

We need to find the ‘I’

I believe wholeheartedly that many of us forget about the ‘I‘ in all things – famIly, lIfe, marrIage, chIldren,  tIme ~ and once we start finding the ‘I’ we will have a greater sense of completIon, happIness, fulfIllment, satIsfaction – we have a LIFE!

That is what I plan to do with my new beginning of 2011 – be true to my ‘I.’

My wish for all my friends – near and far – is that you too will go on a quest for your ‘I’ and that you will find what that means for you.  We can’t be afraid of change.  We can’t be stagnant in relationships or jobs or with friends that don’t nurture us or do us well.  We need to take charge of our happiness in our own life and make the changes – no matter how difficult – that need to be made.  We can’t be afraid to take the less traveled road - we need to be confident in our ability to forge our OWN path!  It could make all the difference!

So, I end this entry with my favorite poem of all time (well, I am an English Professor after all) – and I think it speaks well to the concept of forging ahead and treading the path that you might not have chosen, as it could make all the difference!

Here’s to taking the road less traveled……

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
